2026 Illinois Not-for-Profit Security Grant Program (NSGP-IL)

Illinois Churches Just Secured Nearly $800,000 in Security Grant Funding

Six campuses, $797,103 awarded, and what every Illinois church should know before the next round opens.

Our team helped six Illinois church campuses get awarded a combined $797,103 through the Illinois Nonprofit Security Grant Program (Illinois NSGP). That funding will translate directly into safer doors, better cameras, hardened windows, improved lighting, security personnel, and stronger access control for ministries across the state.

If your church hasn’t looked closely at this grant program before, this year is the year to pay attention. Here’s why.

Illinois Churches Have a Rare “Both Grants” Opportunity

Most nonprofits know about the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP), which funds security upgrades at houses of worship and other at-risk nonprofits. Fewer realize that Illinois also runs its own state-level NSGP, and that eligible Illinois churches can pursue BOTH at the same time.

That means a single Illinois church campus could potentially qualify for:

  • Federal NSGP: up to $200,000 per campus, $600,000 per organization

  • Illinois NSGP: up to $150,000 per campus, $450,000 per organization

For multi-campus ministries, the stacked opportunity is significant.

What This Year’s Awards Actually Look Like

To make that real, here is the recent slate of Illinois NSGP awards from churches we helped through the process. We are grateful the program is funding work like this in our state.

Christ Community Church (3 campuses)

  • St. Charles: $149,997 funding doors, access control, and window film

  • DeKalb: $94,353 funding security personnel, window film, and cameras

  • Streamwood: $102,753 funding security personnel, doors, and cameras

Cornerstone Community Church, Byron

  • $150,000 funding cameras, alarms, and access control

Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center, Rockford

  • $150,000 funding camera upgrades

NorthBridge Church, Antioch

  • $150,000 funding lighting, doors, and window film

Across the six campuses, that is $797,103 going directly into physical security improvements at Illinois churches.

What These Grants Typically Fund

If you have been thinking about a security upgrade but holding off because of cost, this is worth a careful look. Illinois NSGP and Federal NSGP can typically be used for:

  • Security cameras and video surveillance

  • Reinforced doors and windows, including protective window film

  • Access control systems

  • Emergency communications

  • Cybersecurity protection for ministry systems

  • Perimeter security, lighting, and fencing

  • Contracted security personnel

  • Active threat and de-escalation training

The Catch: Illinois Deadlines Move Fast

Here is the part that catches most churches off guard. Once the Illinois NSGP application window officially opens, organizations usually have just 3 to 5 weeks to complete and submit everything.

That is a tight runway when you consider what a strong application actually requires:

  • A documented vulnerability or risk assessment

  • Project scope and prioritized improvements

  • Vendor quotes and budget detail

  • Investment justifications and grant narratives

  • Authorized signatures and supporting documents

Churches that prepare months in advance consistently submit stronger applications and win larger awards. Churches that wait for the official announcement before starting are almost always playing catch-up.

The Track Record

Across our Illinois work last round, 80% of the church clients we supported received the FULL funding amount they requested under the Illinois NSGP. For most, that was at or near the $150,000-per-campus cap.

A few reasons that win rate matters:

  • Religious organizations qualify for meaningful scoring advantages in both programs

  • First-time applicants can earn additional points

  • The narrative and justification sections are where applications are won and lost, and that is where most do-it-yourself applicants struggle

For over 18 years, our team has supported security and technology projects for ministries across the country, including Newspring, Watermark, Second Baptist Houston, and Seacoast Church. We bring that same approach to every Illinois NSGP application.

If You Want Help, We Are Here
